Managing Sugar Intake in Insulin-Resistant Horses

Insulin resistance can put your horse at risk for laminitis and other health issues.

  • Help keep them healthy with these tips:
Limit pasture time, especially during spring and fall when grass sugars peak.
Feed low-NSC hay (non-structural carbohydrates) and soak if needed to reduce sugars.
Avoid sweet feeds and treats high in starch or molasses.
Encourage regular exercise to improve insulin sensitivity.

Always work with your vet to tailor a plan for your horse’s needs.
